Launch of Byomkesh Bakshi web series in Hoichoi

There are lots of cinematic adaptations regarding the character of Byomkesh Bakshi, soon it will add another milestone to the existing exploits. Byomkesh Bakshi, a very popular name in Bengali Literature, created by acclaimed author Sharadindu Bandopadhyay, is no doubt a name which Bengali literature fans utter with pride. It may be a crime
scene or a criminal with a social disorder, where police has failed to solve the mystery and we, as Bengali’s feel happy to imagine that a sharp brained detective will solve the case alongside Feluda and Kakababu; and this detective would be none other than Byomkesh Bakshi. Byomkesh doesn’t call himself a detective rather he calls himself a ‘Satyanesi’ (A person who seeks the truth), because detective or ‘Goyenda’ are words which Byomkesh does not agree with.

With the increasing popularity of online media, SVF (Shri Venkatesh Films) has launched the web series of Byomkesh Bakshi to OTT (Over- The -Top) platform. With the superb direction of Sayantan Ghoshal, this
web series is starrs Bengali actors Anirban Bhattacharya as Byomkesh, Ridhima Ghosh as Satyabati, his wife and Subrat Dutta as Ajit. According to director Sayantan Ghoshal, “We are offering something
distinctly different from the previous Byomkesh versions, a fast-paced thriller web series. This is a cooler version of Byomkesh, targeting the large segment of our youth viewers.”

I was invited to the launch of Hoichoi, in collaboration with Kolkata Bloggers, on the 13th of October’2017 at Park Hotel, Kolkata, where the premier was screened for the first time in front of the media. Interacting
with the actors and the director was also a part of this event. It was no doubt a great experience witnessing the live interactions with the media. Bhattacharya added that it was a real challenge for him to showcase
Byomkesh in a web series to a numbers of young minds and deliver better than their expectation. Anirban was very confident about his role. he delightedly shared with us that someday may be a new book will be released in college street, where all the actors’ names will be published who had acted as Byomkesh along with Anirban Bhattacharya.

Till now I was talking about the background, now I’m focusing on the series. The event allowed us to witness the first episode which was an amalgamation of two stories- Satyanwesi and Pother Kanta. The script of this episode holds you to your seats most of the time. It was shaped into a fast moving investigative thriller with plenty of twists and turns till the end; with a very appropriate background score. Subrat Dutta as Ajit provided the much needed comic breaks. Mimo, as a music director has done a superb job throughout the series. At the end of the session,
Mimo shared his experience while working with the team. In some parts, sitar had been used with contemporary instruments like drums and guitars. The usage of subtitles would help in garnering audience beyond the Bengali speaking society.

All the episodes would be available on the Hoichoi application from 14th of October,2017. Hoichoi, the first ever internationally available Bengali digital content platform, which will be streaming Bengali songs, movies
