Where it is located:

Khecheopalri Lake is situated near the charming village of Khecheopalri in the Pelling region of West Sikkim, India. To reach the lake, one can fly to Bagdogra Airport or have a train journey till New Jalpaiguri railway station and then embark on a scenic road journey to Pelling. From Pelling, it’s a short drive of around 30 minutes to reach the lake. Alternatively, one can also take a direct taxi or shared jeep from Siliguri or Gangtok to Khecheopalri village.

The Sacred Buddhist Story:

Khecheopalri Lake holds immense significance in Buddhist folklore. According to legend, the lake is believed to be the sacred abode of Goddess Tara, a revered Buddhist deity. It is said that she blessed the lake with her divine powers, making it a place of spiritual reverence for Buddhists. The lake is also known as “Wishing Lake” due to the belief that all wishes made here with a pure heart will be fulfilled. Buddhists consider Khecheopalri Lake as holy due to its association with Goddess Tara and its serene and pure ambiance. The lake is believed to possess the power to cleanse one’s sins and grant spiritual enlightenment. It is also said that the lake never allows a single leaf to float on its surface, as the birds in the area swiftly remove them, maintaining the purity of the water. This divine connection makes the lake a revered destination for Buddhist pilgrims and devotees.
