Exploring Charkhole, West Bengal in bike

Nestled at an altitude of 5,000 feet in the remote Eastern Himalayas, about 15 kilometers from Lolegaon, lies a small valley where nature has generously bestowed its beauty upon the secluded land of Charkhole. Also known as Charkhol Lolegaon, this quaint Lepcha village offers a breathtaking view of the lush green valley and the majestic Mt. Kanchenjunga in the background, making it a newly popular destination among travelers in the region.

Exploring Charkhole: A Hidden Gem in North Bengal

It was December 2024, and the air was filled with excitement. Three of us, lifelong friends with a shared love for adventure, had decided to leave the comfort of home behind and embark on a bike journey to explore the serene beauty of North Bengal. Our destination was Kalimpong, but we were also determined to uncover some offbeat spots along the way.

After spending a night in Kafer Gaon, we found ourselves on the third day, with a new plan in mind: descend towards Siliguri. But, as we stood in the hills, a thought crossed our minds – why not spend a few more hours exploring the beauty of the mountains before we left?

That’s when Charkhole came into the picture. It wasn’t part of our original itinerary, but the idea came up spontaneously. From Mairung Gaon, we decided to make a detour and ride towards Charkhole. After all, being on a bike gave us the freedom to change plans on a whim, and what better way to explore than by riding through these untouched hills?

I had heard about Charkhole before, but it was always a distant dream. Now, getting the chance to visit this hidden village on a bike felt like the cherry on top of an already perfect trip.

The roads leading to Charkhole were unlike anything we had ever seen. Serene and picturesque, they seemed to embrace us as we rode deeper into the heart of nature. The gentle breeze, the clear blue sky, and the peaceful surroundings made everything feel magical. The moment we took the turn towards Charkhole, something changed in the air. It felt like we had entered another world, one filled with calm and beauty.

As we entered the village, I was surprised by how different it felt from what I had imagined. It wasn’t just a traditional, rural village. Instead, it had a modern yet rustic charm, like a small town that was well-planned and beautifully decorated. It was neither crowded nor too quiet, but it felt perfectly balanced. The village was mainly made up of homestays run by the local Lepcha families. These weren’t the kind of raw, rustic homestays you might expect; they were modern, well-maintained, and had a commercial yet cozy vibe.

Charkhole was a place that blended nature with culture in a way I hadn’t experienced before. There was an old Gompa in the village, and I decided to take a walk around to explore it. If you walk through the village on foot, you’ll find that every corner has a story to tell. The old Gompa is tucked away on the uphill road, just after the viewpoint, and the climb to it is worth every step. As we ascended further, the road became even more beautiful, offering views of the village and beyond that were breathtaking.

Walking around the village, I felt like I was uncovering a treasure at every turn. The houses were so colorful, and the streets were lined with plants and flowers that made everything seem alive. The atmosphere was calm and welcoming, and it was impossible not to feel at peace here.

One of the things I loved most about Charkhole was the warmth of its people. The villagers were incredibly friendly. We stopped by one of the local homes for a cup of tea, and before we knew it, we were deep in conversation with the locals, learning about their lives, their traditions, and their connection to the land. It felt like we were part of the village, even if just for a few moments.

By the time we finished exploring Charkhole, I felt like we had discovered a hidden gem. This wasn’t just a place; it was a feeling. A feeling of peace, beauty, and connection to nature. It wasn’t just the picturesque roads or the friendly faces; it was the entire vibe of the place that made it unforgettable.

As we got back on our bikes to continue our journey towards Siliguri, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for this unexpected detour. Sometimes, the best adventures are the ones that come unplanned, and Charkhole had proven to be one of those special, offbeat places that will forever be etched in our memories.
