Tiger Caves
The caves have been a popular tourist spot since antiquity, and are known locally as Tigers Caves because of the carved heads of eleven tigers around the entrance. The name has nothing to do with any actual tigers being present; the caves got this appellation from the crowns of eleven tigeresque heads which decorate the entrance. It is believed that these images resemble an animal called ‘yeli’ which is a cross between a lion and a tiger. The carving of the Hindu Goddess Durga on top of these tigers is one of the most attractive features of the caves.
