Nestled amidst the majestic Himalayas, this temple holds not only religious significance but also a fascinating tale of myth and wonder. Join me on this virtual journey as we delve into the enchanting world of the Hidimba Devi Temple in Manali!
A Mythical Beginning of Hidimba Devi temple
It is believed that over a thousand years ago, the demon Hidimba ruled these very lands. But hold on, there’s more to this story! The story of Hidimba Devi is rooted in the ancient Indian epic, Mahabharata. Hidimba, born as a demoness, was the sister of Hidimb, the fearsome king of the Kamyaka forest. When the Pandavas sought refuge in the forest, Hidimb ordered his sister to kill them. However, Hidimba fell in love with Bhima, one of the Pandava brothers, and revealed her true identity to him. She helped the Pandavas defeat her own brother and, with Kunti’s approval, married Bhima. Their agreement was that once their child was born, Bhima and his brothers would leave the region.
Hidimba agreed to this condition and gave birth to a son. After the Pandavas left, Hidimba raised her son alone in the forest, and he grew up to be a strong warrior like his father. Despite her difficult circumstances, Hidimba harbored no ill feelings towards Bhima and remained devoted to him.
Hidimba, known for her supernatural powers, turned into a goddess after practicing rigorous tapasya during the later phase of her life. Unlike her brother Hidimb, who was known for his evil nature, Hidimba was kind and helpful to locals. She became the protector of the region and was worshipped as a deity. Locals built a temple in her name, which has become a popular tourist attraction in Manali due to its unfathomable beauty. Today, Hidimba Devi continues to be revered for her unique story and her temple remains a significant cultural landmark.

One such celebration is the grand Durga Puja, held in September/October, where the entire temple is adorned with flowers and lights. We visited the temple during the evening and was initially intimidated by its spooky appearance in the dim light. However, as soon as I entered the temple, I was awed by its magnificent wooden interiors, featuring intricate carvings. The temple was built on a massive rock, considered sacred as it represents the earth goddess. Its design included a three-tiered wooden roof and projecting canopies, giving it an old-world charm.
The temple’s serene atmosphere had a profound effect on me, touching the depths of my soul and providing a perfect escape for nature and peace enthusiasts like myself. It was nestled in the midst of a dense pine forest, adding to its natural beauty. Walking through the woods, I experienced a chilling and enchanting atmosphere, making it the best temple visit I’ve ever made. The calming aura of this place inspired humility and a sense of peace. There was a silence that can be felt to easily touch the bottom of your heart, which I felt earlier during my Singalila National forest trip with the same shadow and silent vibe.
